Precious Time

‘Precious Time’ acrylic on canvas, 36×48, in private collection. c 2023AnnTrainorDomingue

In preparing for a show at Portland Art Gallery this past June 2023, I was considering what my new works might be about. I chose to highlight simplicity and discernment in the design of shapes, color palette, and feeling I was working to create. This approach proved to be a challenge for me as my previous work was quite busy in linework, shapes and colors, and multiple points of view. As other artists may experience it is not always easy to stay focused on an intention with a paintings as shiny objects hold such sway with our psyche. 🙂 Focus and attention won out in this piece as I consciously had to keep my intention in the forefront of my mind–as plenty of things I could have included danced around in my head like sugarplums asking to be included. This painting was purchased on the same day I delivered it to Portland Art Gallery to a collector who expressed, ‘I could look at this piece every day and not be tired of the view’. Quite a compliment. I’ll be focused on this approach for new works in 2024. Cheers! As an artist of any kind, do you struggle with too many choices?

Lesson learned: Discernment is powerful. I won’t miss out on anything if I don’t include everything, aka fomo.

I like the subtlety and quietness of this painting. I confess, however, that I find the small head distracting. Perhaps it is a message to get out of your head!

Hi Pat. Thanks for reading. 🙂 I appreciate your noticing the subtlety and quiet, like the feeling just after reading a very good book. I just want to sit with it for a while and feel the story and author. At that point the details don’t matter– just the reader’s (my) sense of a little story. The proportions overall in this piece are ‘off’ from reality as I wanted the overall gist or felt reaction to the whole picture to be internalized as a whole with understated color, minimal elements or detail. I’m sure the proportions of the figure will feel not quite right for some and not even noticed by others. It’s all good. 🙂
